Self-managed PostgreSQL

Migrating, running, and scaling relational databases like PostgreSQL in the cloud can be complex and costly. With Volumez’ cloud-aware data infrastructure as a service platform on OCI, we achieved 65K transactions per second (TPS) or 3X the performance at one-third the latency and up to a 75% cost savings vs. other fully managed database services.

How it works

OCI offers two categories of block storage: OCI Block Volumes and OCI Compute VM Dense I/O Shapes. Dense I/O Shapes provide direct access to raw NVMe media, which deliver exceptional throughput and latency, but the media are ephemeral and include no data services such as RAID and snapshots. OCI Block Volumes are full-featured software-defined storage managed by OCI that provides data services and zonal resilience.

Volumez allows customers to access the exceptional price-performance of OCI Compute VM Dense I/O Shapes by composing a pure Linux data path on application servers that store data directly on slices of Dense I/O media. Volumez recommends VM.DenseIO.E4 and VM.DenseIO.E5 series for the media.

Volumez provides enterprise-grade data services including snapshots, encryption, and multi-zone resilience without the overhead of OCI Block Volumes. Attaching a volume to an instance requires simply choosing the volume, node name (instance), and mount point.

“This combination of performance, resilience, and cost efficiency makes the Volumez composability service an attractive option for organizations looking to optimize their PostgreSQL database deployments in the Oracle Cloud. Being able to easily compose and orchestrate OCI resources can enhance scalability and facilitate managing multiple database instances effectively.”
